“Harvest in the Heartland”

corn picker     The early selection of the theme “Harvest in the Heartland” was a wonderful decision and provided a panorama of opportunities to tell the story of the evolution of corn, soybeans and wheat as a crop in Middle America and Canada. For over a year, Jackie Williams and her initial committee of Don McKinley and Marvin Huber researched and planned the project. They created this most interesting story illustrated through period displays of agricultural crops and early-to-modern implements in and outside the hotel. Such items as Indian tools, the 1837 John Deere replica plow, a one-row riding cultivator, a John Deere Model 10 one-row mechanical corn picker, and a new John Deere 9660STS combine on display in front of the hotel served to guide us on an incredible trip through history. We thank Jackie, her organizing committee, volunteer workers, and those who loaned us the beautiful old and new equipment.
Ken and David         The conference got underway on Wednesday evening, March 8 with the vendor doors opening at 6 p.m. Following this was the opening night reception attended by over 600 people who enjoyed John Deere cookies, coffee, soft drinks, and marvelous country-western, blue grass and good old American music by Alan Murphy’s HARVEST HOME band from Iowa City. They were outstanding and very much enjoyed by everyone. Welcoming us to Moline and the Quad Cities – the home of Deere & Company, was David Everitt, President, Agricultural Division – North America, Australia, Asia and Global Tractor and Implement Sourcing. Mr. Everitt mentioned the long history of quality and innovation which Deere & Company has established with people around the world. He also congratulated two-cylinder and new generation enthusiasts for their part in keeping old tractors and implements alive for future generations. It was a delightful evening of food, music and socializing.
workshop     As in all of the previous “Gatherings,” the 2006 workshops were outstanding - led by some of the most well-respected and knowledgeable experts in the hobby. Thirty-three workshops and 16 drop-in sessions were offered on two-cylinder and new generation tractors as well as several sessions focusing on implements. You name the subject matter...it was probably addressed. Clutch rebuilding, check-row planting, electrical systems, farming with two-cylinders, implement restoration, toys, the history of combines, collecting new generation tractors, corn pickers, JD wheels...and these were just a few of the topics included. There were so many interesting sessions that attendees had difficulty making choices. A huge thank you is extended to our outstanding workshop leaders. You are the greatest!!! Thanks for being a part of the 2006 “Gathering.”
