"Gathering of the Green"
A bi-annual nationwide conference for
John Deere collectors, restorers & enthusiasts.

Popular Writer & Columnist
is “Gathering” Keynote Speaker

I wish I was the SPEAKER      Hi, I'm Meli. One of my duties as hostess of the "Gathering" web site is to tell you about the scheduled activities and attractions of the next conference. It is my pleasure to introduce our Saturday evening speaker.

John Phipps, well-known writer, columnist, speaker, and humorist, has been selected as the keynote speaker for the “Gathering of the Green” banquet which will be held on March 13, 2004, the final day of the conference.
The “Gathering” Board of Directors sought out suggestions for speakers who would appeal to our group of two-cylinder enthusiasts. That person needed to understand the antique tractor hobby, have a connection to agriculture, and possess the ability to deliver a message spiced with humor. Each discussion came back with the same result – John Phipps.
John Phipps’ humor and commentary appear regularly in the FARM JOURNAL and TOP PRODUCER magazines. Since 1994, he has been speaking to agricultural, governmental and civic groups throughout the nation. John tailors his presentations to the type of group he’s addressing, using a hybrid style to fit the organization. By mixing “McGlaughlin”, “Oprah”, and “Leno” with his own wit, the result is a humorous and interesting presentation. His speeches are neither rote recitations nor stand-up comedy, but a fast-paced, laugh-filled adventure to new thoughts. We anticipate that John will somehow tie old tractors to their role in farming and the world of agriculture.
An independent farmer, John Phipps grew up on a five-generation farm near Chrisman, Illinois. He graduated with honors from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1970 with a degree in chemical engineering and a minor in economics. The next five years were spent as a nuclear engineering officer aboard the USS SEAHORSE, a fast-attack submarine. In 1975, John returned to the family farm. In addition to farming, writing and speaking, he has taught at the junior college level and worked in banking. A long list of community and civic activities and extensive service to his church round out his very busy career. His honors are many, among them being selected for four years for Best Humor, and recipient of the Best Regular Column award by the American Agricultural Editors Association in 1995 and 2000.
Won’t you please welcome John Phipps to the “Gathering of the Green!”
