Hi, I'm Meli. One of my duties as hostess of the "Gathering" web site is to tell you about the scheduled activities and attractions of the next conference. It is my pleasure to introduce our evening speakers.
Keynote Speaker:
Ken Buell, Lenexa, KS will be our keynote speaker during the 2008 “Gathering” banquet on Saturday evening. Ken is a long-time John Deere employee who is manager of College Partnerships for the John Deere North American Marketing Center. This cooperative program trains mechanics, parts technicians and dealer trainees for Deere & Company. Early in his career, Ken was a film producer for John Deere and served in several other positions including supervisor of legal services. He grew up on a farm, is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, has eleven two-cylinder and New Generation tractors, collects all sorts of memorabilia, is an active 4-H leader and is also an auctioneer. With his farm boy and John Deere background, Ken will share a humorous as well as thought-provoking message of the importance of “Preserving the Past.” Buckle up for a fun and interesting evening.
Evening Speakers:
Dr. Leonard Bashford, Director of the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory (recently retired) at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln -- Leonard will share his many years of work as director of this well-known laboratory including tractor performance testing and the international role played by the laboratory. For more than 85 years, companies have been sending tractors to this laboratory for verification of the power of these machines. This will be a most interesting and informative presentation that you won’t want to miss!

He has a passion for writing and has a particular interest in the history of Deere & Company. Neil will speak about the company’s third president, William Butterworth, who oversaw the company’s development (1907-1936) into a full-line manufacturer, including its entry into the harvester and tractor business. Be sure to put Neil’s presentation of this most interesting and exciting period in Deere & Company’s history on your list of activities for the Gathering.
Dave Mowitz, Machinery Editor, Successful Farming magazine -- Dave is an experienced and well-known writer for this widely read farm-related magazine. He will share his humorous “Murphy’s Law” approach to the restoration of antique tractors. All of us will enjoy hearing about the unexpected and crazy things which occur as we attack these old tractors we love so much. We may even recognize ourselves as Dave shares his wit and humor.
